A Personal Invitation from Barney Davey

How to Find Collectors and Build Your Art Career

Here is a story about two artists, Jennifer and Leslie. Although they did not know each other, they lived in the same metro area, and were about the same age. Both received fine art degrees with the plan to make a full-time career as a fine artist.

After college, both artists sought jobs in the art business. Jennifer found work in a local gallery, starting as an assistant administrator. You know those jobs, glorified gofer. Gofer this and gofer that, pitch in on shipping and every other menial task, such as changing bulbs and keeping the place presentable.

Leslie found work with a retail picture framer. This shop carried a small selection of prints and originals to boost sales when customers came to the shop. Leslie’s duties were to learn how to cut mats, frames, and glass to assemble them into a beautiful finished product. She did have the gofer duties like Jennifer, but spent very little time working in the front with customers.

Both artists were about equally talented. They worked hard at continuing to hone their art skills by taking classes and studying with master artists. As they progressed, working on improving their art, they also learned ways to become more productive. Overall, they both looked to have promising futures.

Fast-forward twenty-five years.

Jennifer and Leslie had each fulfilled their college dreams of becoming a full-time artist. However, when you look at their careers, the similarities stop.

Jennifer’s career thrived. She sells virtually all of her originals and demand for her work has been strong for years. She pays her bills on time, relies on no outside support and enjoys a full life with time to travel to the best painting locations annually.

Leslie, on the other hand, struggles. She makes sales, but they are spotty. When things run good, it’s great. When they don’t, it makes for tough times.

What made the difference?

If you are like me, you are curious about what makes some people’s lives to flourish while others fight for bones. It can’t just be talent because you see it all the time where the talent of some artists just don’t get the reward and recognition it deserves. Moreover, those more successful artists do not seem to have more intelligence or dedication to their craft. Certainly, it isn’t that one person wants success and the other doesn’t.

The differentiation is a result of what a person knows and how that knowledge is used.

This is why I am writing to you and other artists eager to grow their careers. For those of you who recognize my name, Barney Davey, you know I have worked closely with Jason Horejs for more than two years in producing monthly hour-long art marketing and art business broadcasts.

You might recognize me for one of the many art-marketing books I’ve written, including Guerrilla Marketing for Artists: How 100 Collectors Can Bulletproof Your Career.

Both Jason and I work constantly to give visual artists knowledge and art marketing smarts – the details and insights that they can use in their art businesses.

A New, Unique Learning Opportunity

I have been helping visual artists with marketing and art selling strategies since 1988. In my career, I have had the opportunity to work with some of the most successful artists, art publishers and art dealers in the industry. I have taken every valuable lesson learned from them and added my own considerable art marketing wisdom to the mix.

The result is a two-hour webinar aimed at helping you become more like Jennifer than Leslie. You see, Jennifer had the good fortune to work with a gallery owner who was an exceptional entrepreneur. His gallery and side businesses were the marvel and envy of his competitors. He knew how to make things happen. He launched fearlessly, worked doggedly and tested theories constantly.

He freely passed his accumulated wisdom to Jennifer and other artists who came to work for him. She was not alone in her success. The gallery owner was proud of the many fine art careers he boosted through his knowledge.

How to Find Art Collectors & Build Your Career Webinar Will Teach You

You know you can’t get a lifetime of knowledge transferred in a two-hour webinar. You also know you can’t do all the marketing you would like to do and still find time for making art and having a life. We will focus on three important aspects of making a successful art career:

    1. Get a grip on your goals and resources. Understanding what you want from your career and what you have at your disposal to achieve your goals is the critical first step towards fulfillment.
    2. Networking and local marketing. Learning to identify who might buy from you and what steps you can comfortably take to meet them is networking for you. Deeply grasping that those who know you are your easiest prospect to sell,  and knowing how to market to them build a solid foundation under your career is crucial to your long-term career success.
    3. Task and project management. We could talk for eight hours about online marketing, but we won’t because there are tons of information about how to go about it. What you will learn is how to evaluate whom to target and what type of marketing to use, then how to plan, schedule and execute your marketing in a way that overlays and strengthens every marketing message you send.

Information Unlike Any Other

You can check for yourself what I am saying here. There is no other art-marketing program, expert, or guru who looks at or offers insights on how to boost your art career the way this program does. It comes from nearly 30 years of helping visual artists and other small business owners gain success in the marketplace. This is practical advice you can use to tailor a unique marketing program built around your resources and abilities. Not some cookie cutter, one size fits all marketing program.

Knowledge Is Power

If you are looking for ideas, information and inspiration to help you grow your art career, this webinar is perfect for you. You will get lots of quality information, but not so much you feel completely overwhelmed. You will choose what you want to do. Then by being honest with yourself, you will know you can realistically achieve, or what changes you need to make to match your goals with your reality.

If you feel as Jason and I do that this is a fair and reasonable proposition, then you will want to register for the webinar today. It is on Thursday, May 29, 4 pm – 6 pm Pacific Daylight Time. If that timing isn't convenienct, you will receive a link to be able to watch the webinar at another time and as often as you want.

About those two college artists I told about at the beginning of this letter. They graduated from college and started in the business world about the same time. So what made their lives in business different?

Knowledge. Useful knowledge. And its application.

An Investment In Success

Success in an art career is rewarding. Struggling to find success is not. Sometimes, discovering what makes the differences between one artist’s career and another, in terms of sales and recognition, are hard to figure out. That is why it is useful and important to tap the knowledge of others.

I cannot promise you that success will be instantly yours by taking this webinar. But I can guarantee that you will the information you gain from participating will be helpful to your art career for years, even decades, to come.

I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge with you, and more importantly, seeing you implement it in ways that help your career rise to new levels.

Comments from Past Attendees

This was a splendid webinar — completely worth the time and monetary commitment. So much information was made available to us…the webinar was invaluable. S. Ketcham

Learning how to “Create an Ideal Weekly Plan” – I think this will be a tremendous help to keep me focused on the right thing at the right time and reduce the creep of low priority distractions. A. Rimpo

Now that I have direction, I will stop faltering. Previously, I did not know what to do next. The reference guide with list of tools and resources are very helpful. I plan on implementing many of them. I plan to start with mapping my week, which will be most helpful in getting a focus. So many distractions keep me from creating, and then it takes so much time just to promote yourself. B. Venosdel

The whole webinar was very informative, so it’s tough to single out one thing, but the section on social media probably answered the most questions.- A. Bartos

The importance of focusing on the local market; I had been lured by the notion that the internet will allow me to skip that part. K. Doner

Barney Davey’s Webinar was worth every penny and more! His information is current, yet tried-and-true, relevant in today’s quick-passed world. By focusing and closely following the advice,he gives artists gain knowledge and hope that they can sell their artwork, and can overcome marketing obstacles. I am an artist who produces lots of work. However, until now I did not know how to “get it out there” to be seen and sold. Exposure is everything! Thank you!!! S. Pierce
