Opening Reception Thursday, May 21th, 2009, 7-9 p.m.

Note From Jason
This coming Thursday we are opening a new show for renowned Phoenix area artist Penny Benjamin Peterson (May 21 -  June 2). Join us this coming Thursday night for an Artwalk reception from 7-9 p.m.

It's been a busy week. I was in the Bay area last week where I was interviewed for a local arts show in San Jose. The thirty minute interview will air in San Jose later in the month and on Dish Network several months from now. I also gave one of my workshops to artists in Oakland on marketing their art. I will inclue a link to the interview when it is edited and available online.

Take a moment to reflect on the importance of art in your life and surroundings. We recently sold a home in Central Phoenix. In spite of the depressed housing market, we sold the home to the second person who looked at it, before the sign had even gone up. We credit the sale, to a large extent, to the artwork in the home. We have sold two homes in the last five years and credit both rapid sales to the art, which helped our homes stand out from the others in the market. Original art has a transformative power in any space, but especially in a home. Take a moment to enjoy the art surrounding you, and visit Xanadu to bring more beauty into your life!

Penny Benjamin Peterson
From Penny's Biography

"I was born in States Center Iowa but I grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. The warm Arizona sun called my family out West when I was five. I have wonderful memories of living on the farm. Childhood, life is simple and life on the farm was magic. I am thankful that I had that beginning in my life. Now that I have lived so many years in Arizona I have become a true desert rat.  When the desert is in full bloom it is awesome. A lush desert sounds like an oxymoron but it does make quite a transformation. These prickly sometimes dry looking strange plants suddenly come alive with color. While it is still in the slumber state, as I like to call it, the desert is beautiful with its subtle changes in terrain and the way the sunlight and evening sunsets changes the colors of the mountains and the cacti. One needs to be quiet and pay attention to really appreciate the desert. I am influenced by these observations and my paintings reflect this with their bold splashes of color mixed with the serene, calming, spiritual effects of introspection.

"When my older sister died in 1988 it began dramatic change in my art. I felt that abstract expressionism was a more emotional connection.  I met a wonderful teacher, Eleanor Harris, who became my mentor.  She taught me about collage and non-objective shapes. She helped me define my interest and abilities in collage and abstraction. Other instructors followed. I made another shift in my painting style while studying with Louise Cadillac in Greece. In 2007 I traveled to China for an exhibition with a small group of artist. What I bring to the canvas continues to evolve. Now corporate and private collectors throughout the United States, Canada and China own my paintings.

"Sharing my art is an important part of being an artist.  I have organized art auctions for the Arizona Easter Seals and then took a group of artists to the Easter Seal Camp to teach painting to the handicapped children and adults. I also support Free Arts for Abused Children and the American Diabetes Association. I was a Tutor artist for the Diabetes Charity Art Auction, painting with Bob Khan, Fire Chief and Linda Cobb, the Queen of Clean. I was honored to be
Penny Benjamin Peterson, Abstract Paintings their signature artist the last year they held the event. I am now involved with American Diabetes Association’s fund raiser Rip’s B.A.D. Ride, Bikers Against Diabetes. I will participate in an auction for Ovarian Cancer this year as a tribute to Eleanor Harris. "
