| | With
all of the dire headlines these days it's easy to get caught up in the
pessimism so prevalent in the world and forget how good life is and how
much beauty there is in the world. So take a breath, turn off CNBC, and
come down to Xanadu in sunny (okay, not so sunny this week) Scottsdale.
Right now is a great time to buy. I am featuring works in this edition
of the Red Dot which may be acquired for $500 or less.
Have
a question about one of the pieces you see here? I would love to hear
from you, or even better, e-mail the artist directly. You will find
artist e-mail addresses on most gallery pages. Enjoy
life, do something beautiful and buy art today!

| | | | | | | | I studied art and graphic design at The Art
Center College of Design in Los Angeles, then worked in advertising as
an art director, then graphic designer, followed by creative director,
and finally as owner of Jim Bates Advertising. I returned to painting
in 2002. Now in my second career as a fine artist, I create images that
depict emotional moments. My work is representational watercolor
derived through layers of glazes to arrive at rich and boldly colorful
evocative images. I use three primary colors only. My painting are
emotional moments expressed on paper.
I experience something–see a photograph, read a verse, hear a
piece of
music, and then paint. . . more | We
recently sat down with Jim to discuss his work. Below are our
questions and Jim's answers.
| | Xanadu: Why are water colors your
medium of choice, and why do you use just the three colors?
Watercolors
are my medium of choice because they are so spontaneous, but
for
the images I create, require much more advance planning. Old school
thinking leads me to use only three primary colors. Since watercolors
are transparent, I can create any color by mixing or layering and
glazing with red, yellow and blue in the proper sequence.
How did your first
career in advertising shape your second career as a fine artist?
As
an Art Director in advertising agencies, I often used fine art in
media, hiring artists to illustrate products or graphic images for ads.
Creating layouts to evoke responses developed my graphic design
ability. Those two aspects prompted my interest in pursuing fine art on
my own and ultimately defined my representational style.
I love your "Freedom of
Expression" piece. Can you give us some background on it, or
what lead you to create it?
"Freedom
of Expression" was prompted by a group of people seated in a sheltered
bus stop. From that I got the idea of a group of lady friends going out
on the town, with at least one having a grand daughter who wanted to
get dressed up and go too. Because each of the characters in the
painting has a different style, I communicated this visually by
incorporating the advertising billboards to reinforce their
individuality. That yielded the title of the painting.
What feelings do you
hope to engender in the viewers of your work?
I
hope the viewer is entertained, moved and ultimately relates
personally to my attempt to portray "a slice of life"
experience.
Is
your art shipped ready to hang, or do collectors typically frame it?
All
of my original watercolor paintings are either single or double matted
with simple black metal frames and OP-3 acrylic because this is the
predominate requirement for submission into juried watercolor shows.
Each painting is wired and ready to hang. Paintings would be
professionally packed, insured and shipped via FedEx or another
qualified carrier depending on its destination.
