Born in 1967 in a small farming town in Central Indiana, art was never a consideration. Yet, after working farms and fields growing up, I realized this was not what I considered for my life. Art and the art of making came in my first year of college. I meshed a small body of work together and applied to art school. Besides my mother, the rest of the family responded with that “deer in headlights look”. To my surprise, and theirs, I was accepted.
In 1989, I moved to Indianapolis and attended John Herron School of Art. The years that followed opened up worlds that I never imagined.
In 1992, I had the opportunity to experience Paris, France. Seeing the works of masters through history made me more confident, and humbled, to pursue this vocation. Back home, school trips to Washington D.C., Detroit, and my favorite, Chicago filled me with such inspiration that words don't do it justice. The energy, urban culture, museums and galleries, inspired my needs to “carve” out my own way in this world.
In 1993, I graduated from Herron with a BFA in woodworking and furniture design. As I evolved, woodworking was my first love, but ceramics became my mistress. I related to it's nature, responding to this new medium. Afterwards, I realized that my portfolio was 75% mud, 25% wood! I began contemplating graduate school. After all the research, and preparation, I landed here in Arizona. Iattended Arizona State in the fields of ceramics and sculpture from 1997 -2000.
I have since worked as an exhibition prepator, assistant gallery director, and custom designer for events companies. Yet, through all of my endeavors, an Artist I continue to be.
