Mixed Media on Canvas

Marmots are common in Glacier National Park. Hiking to Inspiration Point, we saw this young male, Whistler, fighting with another Marmot while a female looked on from a rock high above. In this matriarchal society, the males fight for dominance. The mixed media painting is a contrast of soft critter and sharp rocks. The Hoary Marmot is a curious, hearty, ground squirrel (the largest of the Marmot species) found in the mountainous areas and sometimes dubbed "whistlers" because of their unique way of communicating and sounding alarms.
