Biography

Mary had always wanted to create paintings that represent the land as she responded to it. For instance, a drive in Rock Creek Park in the fall created a desire to recreate the streams and trees looking so beautiful and alive with vibrant colors. The paintings are created in an expressionistic way that allows her to capture the emotional response to the experience. Wolf Kahn and Brian Rutenberg were two artists that influenced Mary Exline's new way of painting in an expressionistic way. Seeing color being used in such a dramatic way was the force that led her to paint landscapes abstractly using color to express her love of nature. At that time she jettisoned the use of reference photos to free up her creative muse and now begin each painting with thin watery layers of acrylic paint allowing some of the paint to run and drip down the canvas creating a variety of patterns. At that point, the artist studies the designs in the first application to see what images appear. Once this first layer dries, then layers of various colors of oil paints are applied. Thus begins the dialogue of the work. Colors are used straight from the tube along with tertiary and grayed colors. More paint is added along with the use of line in a variety of ways that creates interest, energy and emotion. Then through reflecting upon the designs that have developed in the various applications of paint and glazing, an emotional response is received and it all begins to make sense. The artist having bonded with the painting now moves forward to develop it's personality and color harmony. The artist believes her paintings are a poetic expression for nature in all its forms. My paintings may be viewed in person at the Cyan Studio, 2146 Crystal Plaza Underground Arcade of Arlington, VA.
